Anwar Ibrahim
Malaysia's most famous political prisoner — who went from a jail cell to prime minister
Active — Sworn in as Malaysia's 10th Prime Minister in November 2022 after decades of imprisonment, exile and opposition — one of the most remarkable political comebacks in modern history.
Anwar Ibrahim was born in 1947 and rose to become one of Malaysia's most prominent political figures. A fiery reformist, he was once the heir-apparent to the country's leadership under his mentor, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. But a dramatic falling-out with Mahathir led to Anwar's sacking and, soon after, to his imprisonment on charges of corruption and sodomy that are widely seen as politically motivated.
Anwar spent nearly a decade in prison, becoming a global symbol of political persecution and the leader of the reformasi (reform) movement. His imprisonment and release became a recurring feature of Malaysian politics for two decades.
In a stunning reversal of fortune, Anwar was released, returned to politics, and — after years of coalition building — was sworn in as Malaysia's 10th Prime Minister in November 2022. He leads a reformist government, though he faces significant challenges from within his own coalition.
