The longest-serving leader in Cambodia's modern history — who handed the premiership to his son but stayed in power

Hun Sen is one of the world's longest-serving leaders, having ruled Cambodia as Prime Minister for nearly four decades. His grip on power dated back to the 1980s, and through the 1990s and 2000s he consolidated control over the country, becoming one of the most enduring authoritarian leaders in the world.

In a carefully choreographed transition, Hun Sen officially stepped down as Prime Minister in 2023, handing the position to his eldest son, Hun Manet. But the move was less retirement than a reshuffle of the seat of power. Hun Sen remains the head of the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) and was elected President of the Senate — a role that keeps him at the center of Cambodian politics.

He continues to exert influence behind the scenes, including during moments of regional tension. When border tensions flared with Thailand in July 2025, he was at the helm coordinating the response, dismissing rumors that he had fled the country.
