Ferdinand Marcos
The dictator who ruled the Philippines for 21 years and was swept out by a street uprising
Deceased — President 1965-86; declared martial law in 1972; fled to Hawaii in the 1986 People Power revolution and died in exile in 1989.
Ferdinand Marcos was president of the Philippines from 1965 to 1986 and its most polarizing leader. In 1972 he declared martial law, citing a growing communist insurgency, and proceeded to rule by decree for years - suspending Congress, jailing opponents and presiding over an era marked by documented human-rights abuses and a deeply crony economy.
His rule became defined by spectacular graft. The Marcos family amassed a vast fortune - the phrase 'Imelda's 3,000 shoes' became shorthand for the excess - and estimates of hidden wealth ran into the billions. Yet the regime held on until the assassination of opposition leader Ninoy Aquino in 1983 ignited a mass movement that Marcos could no longer contain.
In February 1986, the peaceful EDSA People Power Revolution forced Marcos to leave the country; he fled to Hawaii with US backing. He died there in 1989. His legacy remains bitterly contested - a 2016 burial in the Heroes' Cemetery drew huge protests - and his family stayed powerful: his son, Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr., was elected president in 2022.
