Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr.

The opposition senator whose assassination ignited a revolution

Deceased — Assassinated at Manila airport in 1983; his death sparked the 1986 People Power revolution that ended the Marcos dictatorship.

Benigno 'Ninoy' Aquino Jr. was one of the Philippines' brightest political stars - a young, dynamic senator and the most prominent opponent of Ferdinand Marcos. When Marcos declared martial law in 1972, Aquino was among the first arrested, spending almost eight years in prison, much of it on death row, before being allowed to leave for the United States in 1980.

He returned home on 21 August 1983, and was shot dead on the tarmac at what became Ninoy Aquino International Airport. The assassination - never fully solved; many blamed Marcos' inner circle - made him an instant martyr and electrified the opposition.

His death set the country on a course that ended the dictatorship. His widow, Corazon 'Cory' Aquino, ran in the 1986 election and became president after the EDSA People Power Revolution. Their son, Benigno 'Noynoy' Aquino III, later served as president from 2010 to 2016.
