AirAsia (now Capital A Berhad)
The budget airline that got hit hard by COVID — and reinvented itself as a broader holding company
Transformed — Hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, AirAsia Group renamed itself Capital A Berhad in January 2022 to reflect its new identity as a broader investment holding company. The airlines still fly under the AirAsia brand, but the parent now also spans digital, logistics and fintech ventures.
AirAsia was founded in 1993 and transformed into one of Asia's most famous and successful budget airlines under the leadership of Tony Fernandes, who bought the struggling carrier in 2001 and built it into an aviation powerhouse. Its low-cost model and catchy branding made it a household name across Southeast Asia, and it expanded into a network of regional airlines.
The COVID-19 pandemic, however, devastated the global aviation industry, and AirAsia was hit especially hard. As borders closed and travel collapsed, the airline lost most of its revenue. Rather than simply waiting for a recovery, the group decided it could not be just an airline anymore.
In January 2022, AirAsia Group renamed itself Capital A Berhad to reflect its broader ambition as an investment holding company. While the AirAsia airlines continue to operate under their familiar brand, the parent now encompasses digital, logistics and fintech ventures — a strategic pivot designed to reduce the group's dependence on flying alone.
