Thailand's billionaire former prime minister, ousted in a coup — who returned after 15 years and went back to prison

Thaksin Shinawatra was born in 1949 and built a telecommunications fortune before entering politics. In 2001 he became Thailand's Prime Minister, and his populist policies won him enormous support among rural Thais. He was a businessman-turned-populist leader who reshaped Thai politics.

Thaksin was ousted in a 2006 military coup and later convicted on corruption and abuse-of-power charges. To avoid prison, he spent about 15 years in self-imposed exile, living abroad while continuing to exert influence over Thai politics from a distance. His political network became a lasting force in the country.

In 2023 he made a dramatic return to Thailand. After a series of legal twists — including time in a hospital rather than a cell following his surrender — he was granted parole. Then, in September 2025, Thailand's courts ruled that his extended hospital stay was unlawful and ordered him to serve a one-year prison term related to his earlier convictions.
