The First Lady of the Marcos dictatorship — a symbol of its excess, and an enduring political survivor

Imelda Romuáldez Marcos was born in 1929 in the Philippines and rose to prominence as a beauty queen and singer before marrying Ferdinand Marcos, who became president in 1965. As First Lady she took on grand public-construction projects — the Cultural Center, palaces, and an ambitious building programme — and became the glamorous, flamboyant face of the regime's self-promotion.

Her reputation became almost inseparable from the idea of excess. When the Marcos family fled in 1986 during the People Power Revolution, the sheer scale of their wealth was laid bare — including the famous discovery of over a thousand pairs of shoes in the palace. Estimates of the family's hidden wealth ran into the billions of dollars, accumulated during a dictatorship marked by cronyism, graft and human-rights abuses.

Imelda was convicted of corruption in 2018 and sentenced to more than six years in prison (the case was pending on appeal), yet she remained a remarkably durable figure — winning a congressional seat in 1995 and staying politically active for decades. She died in 2025, a survivor of exile and scandal, and to the end an unapologetic defender of the regime she embodied.
