What Happened to the Old Kallang Stadium?

The 55,000-seat open-air stadium whose crowd gave Singapore the "Kallang Roar" — demolished in 2010 and never replaced in spirit.

The Old National Stadium at Kallang was Singapore's sporting heart for decades, famous for the deafening "Kallang Roar." It was demolished in 2010 for the covered Sports Hub — and though a new arena stands, the open-air roar of the old stadium is gone forever.

The stadium that roared

The Old National Stadium at Kallang opened in 1973 as Singapore's premier sporting venue. With a capacity of about 55,000, it was an open-air stadium built for football, athletics and the national day celebrations. It was, for decades, the heartbeat of Singaporean sport.

But its true legend was the atmosphere. When the national team or the Malaysia Cup came to town, the passionate crowd produced a single deafening roar — the famous "Kallang Roar" — that carried across the neighbourhood and became a symbol of Singapore's sporting passion.

Icons of a generation

The stadium hosted the national team's biggest matches, Singapore Cup and Malaysia Cup football, and countless historic sporting moments. For the generation who grew up with it, the Kallang stadium was more than a venue — it was where Singapore cheered as one.

The demolition

Despite enormous public nostalgia, the stadium was demolished in 2010 to make way for the new Singapore Sports Hub. The old stadium's iconic curved roof was removed, and nothing physical remains — no monument, no surviving structure. The beautiful, open-air arena that had defined an era was gone.

Where the roar is now

A modern, covered Singapore Sports Hub now stands nearby — a world-class venue, but a very different experience. The new stadium is enclosed, air-conditioned and designed for a different age, and it cannot reproduce the open-air roar that made the old Kallang stadium special.

The Old National Stadium is remembered as one of Singapore's most beloved lost landmarks — a place whose memory survives in the phrase "Kallang Roar," even though the structure itself is gone forever.
