What Happened to Jaguar?
The iconic British luxury car maker has paused production and is reinventing itself as a pure-electric brand — a gamble on the name.
Jaguar, the iconic British luxury car brand, has cut its model line to one, halted most production and is relaunching as a pure-electric brand. Sales collapsed ~97% during the transition — a bold, high-risk bet on reinventing a storied name for the electric era.
A storied British name
Jaguar was founded in 1922 and became one of the world's most admired luxury car brands. From its elegant saloons to its legendary sports cars, Jaguar was long synonymous with British engineering and distinctive, graceful design.
The radical decision
In the mid-2020s, Jaguar's parent, Jaguar Land Rover, made a bold call: turn Jaguar into a pure-electric luxury brand. To do it, the company decided to cut nearly its entire model line — axing most of its petrol and diesel cars and even the I-Pace electric SUV — to give the new Jaguar a clean slate.
The abrupt transition
The transition has been sudden and costly. Jaguar cut its lineup down to a single model and halted most production, leaving a gap in the market. Its sales collapsed by around 97 percent during that period — a staggering fall that became one of the talking points of the automotive world.
The new car and the rebrand
Jaguar has also launched a controversial rebrand and shown an ambitious new electric GT, the Type 00, meant to relaunch the marque at a higher, more exclusive price point. The new design, badge and positioning represent a sharp break from the Jaguar of the past.
The bet
The move is a calculated risk: end the old Jaguar and bet the storied name on an electric, ultra-premium future. It has divided enthusiasts and observers — some see it as bold reinvention, others as a loss of what made Jaguar special. Either way, it is one of the most dramatic reinventions in modern automotive history.
Where Jaguar is now
Jaguar is, in effect, in a holding pattern — most of its old cars have been ended, and the new electric Jaguar is just beginning to arrive. The legacy marque is betting its entire future on the gamble that the name can be reborn as an exclusive EV brand. Whether it works will be one of the defining questions of the next chapter of the luxury car market.
