Verbatim
The blank-media brand behind generations of floppy disks and CDs — still making storage, now under Mitsubishi ownership
Transformed — Verbatim grew from a 1969 California startup into a global blank-media brand, famous for floppy disks and optical discs. It was later absorbed into the Mitsubishi group and still sells storage and media today, though the floppy-disk world it ruled is long gone.
Verbatim was founded in 1969 and became one of the world's best-known makers of blank recording media. In the 1980s and 1990s its floppy disks were everywhere, and it followed the market into CD-R and DVD recordable media, building a global reputation for reliable storage.
As digital storage moved to hard drives, memory cards and the cloud, Verbatim's core media business shrank. The brand was absorbed into the Mitsubishi group, and today it operates as a storage and consumer-media company under that corporate umbrella.
Verbatim still sells memory cards, USB drives, optical media and other storage products around the world. It remains an active brand, but it is no longer the dominant name in blank media that it was during the physical-storage era.
