The file-sharing service that revolutionised music, was shut down, and survives today as a streaming brand

Transformed — Napster's original peer-to-peer service was shut down in 2001 after a landmark legal fight with the music industry. The brand was revived as a legal streaming service and, after several sales, continues today as a streaming brand experimenting with AI music.

Napster, launched in 1999 by Shawn Fanning, was the peer-to-peer music-sharing service that let millions trade MP3s for free. It exploded in popularity and ignited a landmark legal battle, forcing the original service to shut down in 2001.

The name was never forgotten. After bankruptcy and a string of owners, the "Napster" brand was reborn as a legal subscription streaming service. It passed through several corporate hands — including RealNetworks and a run as part of Rhapsody — before being sold in 2022 and continuing as a streaming platform.

Today Napster survives as a music-streaming service, even experimenting with AI-generated music. It is a brand defined less by what it does now than by the seismic moment it helped create in digital music.

Lineage — where the name went

Napster is two different things sharing one name — a peer-to-peer service whose company died in bankruptcy in 2002, and a trademark that was sold at auction and has since passed through six owners, the last of which renamed itself after it.
