The company that invented desktop publishing, then pivoted to the subscription cloud

Transformed — Once a boxed-software maker, Adobe rebuilt itself as a subscription cloud giant — and ended Flash.

Adobe was founded in 1982 by John Warnock and Charles Geschke, two engineers who had left Xerox PARC after the company declined to commercialise their work. Their first product was PostScript, a page-description language that let computers tell printers exactly how to draw a page. Seeded into Apple's LaserWriter in 1985, PostScript kicked off the desktop-publishing revolution — and made Adobe, almost overnight, the standard of print and graphics.

Over the next two decades it assembled the creative toolkit: Illustrator (1987), Photoshop (acquired with the Knoll brothers in 1995 and turned into an industry icon), and InDesign. Adobe also co-created the PDF in 1993, giving the world a document format that renders identically everywhere. In 2005 it bought Macromedia, taking on Flash and Dreamweaver — the tools behind an enormous share of the early web.

The 2010s forced a reinvention. Adobe moved from selling boxed software licenses to the Creative Cloud subscription model in 2012-13 — a bet on recurring revenue that initially enraged users but turned Adobe into a ~$20-billion-a-year subscription business. The same decade saw it kill Flash (officially retired in December 2020), a once-ubiquitous technology that security and mobile eventually made untenable. Today Adobe is a cloud-first creative and marketing giant, quietly the company whose tools shape much of what you see online.
