The chip giant that defined the PC era and lost the manufacturing crown

Transformed — The PC-era chip king lost mobile, lost Apple's business, and fell behind TSMC in manufacturing - now betting everything on a foundry revival.

Intel was the company that built the personal computer age. Founded in 1968 by Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore, it invented the microprocessor, and 'Intel Inside' plus the x86 chip made it the default brain of the PC industry. For decades it had one of the most profitable and dominant positions in technology.

The 2000s and 2010s quietly eroded it. It missed the smartphone boom - selling its XScale mobile chip business and watching ARM-based chips take the world. Its own customers began designing around it: Apple moved from Intel to its own Apple Silicon in 2020, and a resurgent AMD took share on the desktop.

The deeper problem was manufacturing. Intel had led the world in shrinking chips, but it stumbled on new nodes and Taiwan's TSMC overtook it, becoming the foundry of record for everyone, including Intel's rivals. By 2024-25 Intel was cutting jobs, losing money and betting its future on converting itself into a contract foundry - a transformation with no guarantee of success.
