The 'America's Prince' who died in a 1999 plane crash — and why the conspiracy theories about him don't hold up.

John F. Kennedy Jr., son of President Kennedy, died in a plane crash on 16 July 1999 at age 38. The NTSB ruled it an accident caused by pilot disorientation. Conspiracy theories that he faked his death have no credible evidence, and his ashes were scattered at sea.

The crash

On the evening of 16 July 1999, John F. Kennedy Jr. was piloting a Piper Saratoga from New Jersey to Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, with his wife Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and sister-in-law Lauren Bessette aboard. In hazy, dark conditions over the Atlantic, the plane went down about seven miles southwest of Martha's Vineyard.

All three died. The bodies were recovered and positively identified by 22 July.

What really happened

The National Transportation Safety Board concluded that Kennedy, who had limited experience flying on instruments, became spatially disoriented in the poor visibility over dark water and lost control of the aircraft. The investigation found no evidence of mechanical failure, sabotage or foul play.

The crash was an accident, not an assassination or a staged disappearance.

Who he was

Born in 1960 as the son of President John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, he became a beloved national figure as a child when he saluted his father's casket. He studied at Brown and NYU Law, worked as a Manhattan assistant district attorney, and founded George magazine in 1995. He was one of the most famous private citizens in America, often called 'John-John' or 'America's Prince.'

Why the theories persist

The tragedy of the Kennedy family has long fueled conspiracy theories, and JFK Jr.'s death is no exception. Some claim he faked his death to escape fame; others claim he was assassinated. None hold up: the bodies were positively identified, the wreckage matched his registered aircraft, and the NTSB found no sign of sabotage. The conspiracy theories contradict the evidence.

Where JFK Jr. is now

John F. Kennedy Jr. died on 16 July 1999 and was cremated, with his ashes scattered at sea by his family. He left no children. If he were alive today he would be in his sixties, but the evidence is unambiguous: he did not survive the crash that claimed him, his wife and his sister-in-law.

For a "where is he now" question, the answer is the tragic but factual one: America's Prince is gone, and his memory lives on in the books, documentaries and the enduring fascination with the Kennedy family.
