On 8 March 2014, Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, a Boeing 777 bound from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, vanished from radar. It carried 239 people. Military radar tracked the aircraft making an unexpected U-turn over the Andaman Sea before it disappeared from tracking altogether.

No distress call was ever made.

The largest search in history

The disappearance prompted the largest and most expensive search in aviation history, covering vast stretches of the Indian Ocean. Over the years, pieces of debris believed to be from the aircraft washed up on coastlines, confirming the plane had ended up in the southern Indian Ocean. But the main wreckage was never found.

The mystery deepens

Theories about what happened have ranged widely — from a deliberate diversion by the pilot, to mechanical failure, to hijacking. But with the wreckage never located, none has been proven. The lack of a black box and the main fuselage has left the central questions unanswered.
