Where Is Genghis Khan's Tomb?

The hidden grave of the founder of the Mongol Empire — deliberately concealed and never found after 800 years.

Genghis Khan's tomb has never been found. He died in 1227 and, per legend, was buried in the Khentii Mountains of Mongolia in a site deliberately hidden by his funeral escort. Despite nearly 800 years of searching, the location remains one of history's great unsolved mysteries.

The founder who vanished

When Genghis Khan died in August 1227, he was the founder of the largest contiguous land empire in history. But in death, he became a different kind of legend: his burial site has never been found.

The secret burial

According to tradition, Genghis Khan's body was carried to a secret resting place in the Khentii Mountains of northeastern Mongolia, near where he was born. The funeral procession reportedly killed everyone it encountered to keep the location secret, and the grave itself was hidden — some say by trampling horses, others by diverting a river over it.

For nearly eight centuries, explorers, archaeologists and treasure hunters have searched for the tomb without success. The mystery has only deepened: unlike the tombs of many other ancient rulers, Genghis Khan's has remained stubbornly hidden.

The search is complicated by culture and respect. Many Mongolians are mindful of the sanctity of the burial of their greatest historical figure and are not eager to have it disturbed. Archaeologists have also been cautious, aware that the search carries both scientific and cultural weight.

Where Genghis Khan's tomb is now

The tomb remains unfound. Whether it lies deep in the Khentii Mountains or somewhere else in Mongolia, the location is one of the last great secrets of the Mongol Empire. For a 'where is it' answer, the truth is that Genghis Khan took the location of his own grave with him — and for 800 years, no one has been able to find it.
