What Happened to Verbatim?

The blank-media brand that put floppy disks and CDs in nearly every desk drawer — still selling storage today under Mitsubishi ownership.

Verbatim was founded in 1969 and became a global leader in blank recording media, from floppy disks to CD and DVD. The brand survives under the Mitsubishi group and still sells storage products, but the physical-media market it once dominated has largely vanished.

A blank-media giant

Verbatim was founded in 1969 and quickly became one of the world's premier makers of blank recording media. Through the 1980s and 1990s, its floppy disks were a fixture in offices, schools and homes, and the brand carried that success into CD-R, DVD and other optical formats.

The floppy-disk era

For many people, Verbatim was the name on the disks they used every day to save and move files. It was a period when physical media was the default, and brands like Verbatim built global recognition and reach from a product most computer users handled routinely.

Adapting to digital storage

As computing moved to hard drives, USB memory, memory cards and the cloud, demand for blank disks and tape collapsed. Verbatim was absorbed into the Mitsubishi group, and it shifted into memory cards, USB drives and remaining optical media, becoming a smaller but still recognizable storage brand.

Where Verbatim is now

Verbatim still sells storage and media products worldwide as part of the Mitsubishi group. It remains active, showing new products at trade shows, but the blank-disk empire it once ruled is a thing of the past — a brand that survived the shift away from physical media by changing what it sells.
