The tycoon who became PM

Thaksin Shinawatra built a telecommunications empire before turning to politics. In 2001, he became Thailand's Prime Minister, and his populist programs won him a devoted following, particularly in the rural north. He was a businessman-turned-politician who redefined Thai electoral politics.

The coup

Thaksin's popularity was matched by his polarisation. In 2006, he was ousted in a military coup — a sign of how politically explosive his tenure had become. Rather than face prosecution, he left the country and was later convicted in absentia on corruption and abuse-of-power charges.

15 years of exile

For about 15 years, Thaksin lived in self-imposed exile, avoiding prison while steering Thai politics from abroad. His political network, and the parties aligned with him, remained a powerful force in the country even as he was personally absent.

The return

In 2023, Thaksin made a dramatic return to Thailand. There followed a series of legal twists — he was taken in, then quickly transferred to a hospital amid health concerns, and later granted parole.

The 2025 prison term

The saga was not over. In September 2025, Thailand's courts ruled that Thaksin's prolonged hospital stay was unlawful and ordered him to serve a one-year prison term related to his earlier convictions. The man who had spent years avoiding prison was finally ordered to serve his time.

Even while facing prison, Thaksin remains a formidable figure — widely believed to still exert significant influence over Thai politics, and connected to the ruling political machinery. His story is one of wealth, populism, exile and legal reckoning, still unfolding and still unfinished.
