Natalie Imbruglia became known as an actress on the Australian soap Neighbours before turning to music. In 1997 her debut single "Torn" arrived as a breakout hit, its instantly recognisable chorus making her a chart-topping star in one stroke.
A defining 90s hit
"Torn" was the archetypal late-90s pop moment, and its parent album Left of the Middle sold in huge numbers. The song remains her signature, so closely associated with her that it is easy to forget how much of a career she has built since.
An enduring, quieter career
Imbruglia never again matched the scale of "Torn", but she kept going, releasing albums, returning to acting and modelling, and speaking candidly about living with ADHD and the pressures of fame. Her career has been steady rather than spectacular, but it has lasted.
