The arrival of a new kind of star
Born in 1924 in Omaha, Nebraska, Marlon Brando trained in New York's Method tradition and arrived on Broadway with a ferocious emotional intensity that felt entirely new. When he reached the screen in the early 1950s, his performance in A Streetcar Named Desire as the brutal Stanley Kowalski announced an actor who played with the instincts of a stage animal rather than a polished movie star.
The pinnacle of the 1950s
Brando won the Best Actor Oscar for his work in On the Waterfront (1954), playing the damaged longshoreman Terry Malloy. His improvised, emotionally raw approach — best remembered in the famous "I coulda been a contender" scene — set a benchmark for screen acting and inspired countless actors who followed. For a time he was the most celebrated performer in Hollywood.
Vito Corleone and the second act
In 1972 Brando gave the performance that defines his legend: Vito Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather. Ageing, restrained and quietly menacing, his portrayal is widely considered one of the finest in film history. He won the Best Actor Oscar again but sent a Native American actress to the ceremony in his place, turning the moment into a protest against the industry's treatment of Native Americans.

Brando worked far more selectively in the decades that followed, with the highs of films like Last Tango in Paris and Apocalypse Now interspersed with erratic choices and legal battles. As famous for his personal life as his performances, he became as much a tabloid figure as an acting legend.
