What Happened to Magellan?

The GPS pioneer that helped bring satellite navigation to consumers — still making devices today, but as a MiTAC-owned brand.

Magellan was an early force in satellite navigation, building some of the first handheld GPS receivers and later dominating consumer car navigation. Its navigation business was bought by MiTAC International in 2008, and the Magellan brand still makes GPS devices today.

A satellite-navigation pioneer

Magellan helped introduce GPS to everyday people, building some of the earliest handheld receivers and pushing the technology that would later become dashboard navigation. In the process, the company turned a military and surveying tool into a consumer product.

The consumer navigation boom

Through the 1990s and 2000s, Magellan rode the boom in car and outdoor navigation, competing in a market that grew rapidly as GPS receivers became affordable. Its devices became a common sight on dashboards and in hiking packs.

The MiTAC takeover

In 2008, Magellan's navigation business was acquired by MiTAC International, a Taiwanese manufacturer. The deal folded the once-independent American company into a larger corporate structure, though the Magellan brand name was retained and kept on shipping products.

Where Magellan is now

Magellan lives on as a brand making automotive and outdoor GPS devices under MiTAC. It remains active in the consumer-navigation space, but it is now part of a larger corporate group rather than the pioneering independent company of its early years.
