What Happened to CompUSA?
The iconic big-box computer superstore, bankrupt by 2007 and gone by 2012.
CompUSA was one of America's biggest computer retailers, a staple of 1990s and 2000s tech shopping. It filed for bankruptcy in 2007 and the brand was wound down around 2012 as online shopping took over.
The superstore era
CompUSA was founded in 1984 and helped define the big-box computer superstore. Its stores were large and packed with hardware, software, peripherals and accessories, and walking into one was an experience in itself. For a generation, it was the natural place to go when you were buying a computer in person.
A retail giant
At its peak CompUSA was one of the largest computer retailers in the country. Consumers flocked to its stores and the company symbolized the booming PC era. For many customers, an upgrade meant a trip to CompUSA, surrounded by shelves of boxes, demo machines and printed manuals.
The collapse
The shift online changed everything. E-commerce and big-box discounters undercut CompUSA's prices and convenience, and demand for its in-store experience evaporated. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2007, closed and sold off many of its stores, and its brand faded away in the years that followed.
Where CompUSA is now
CompUSA no longer operates as a retail chain. Its stores are gone and the brand is largely a memory of the PC boom. It is remembered by anyone who grew up shopping for computers in the 1990s and 2000s — a symbol of an era of retail that the internet left behind.
