Journey became one of the biggest arena-rock bands in America in the 1980s, anchored by "Don't Stop Believin'." They survived lineup changes and are still touring in the 2020s.
From progressive rock to the arena
Journey began in 1973 as a progressive-rock group formed by ex-Santana members, led by guitarist Neal Schon. The band soon pivoted to a tighter, hook-driven pop-rock sound, and with Steve Perry on vocals they found a formula that filled stadiums across America.
The anthem factory
Journey's 1981 album "Escape" made them superstars, and songs like "Don't Stop Believin'," "Open Arms" and "Any Way You Want It" became permanent fixtures of rock radio. Their choruses were built to be sung along to by tens of thousands at once, and the band's glossy sound came to define an era.
The second life of a song
"Don't Stop Believin'" got a remarkable second act decades after release, showing up in films, on television and at sporting events. It became one of the most-streamed and most-loved classic rock songs ever, keeping Journey's music front and center long after their peak.
Where Journey is now
Journey continues to tour, with Arnel Pineda fronting the band since 2007 and founder Neal Schon still in the lineup. In 2026 they announced a further run of dates on their farewell tour, proving the band is still an active force in live rock.
