What Happened to Boyzone?
Ireland's original boy band that ruled the 1990s — shaped by tragedy, a split, and reunions built on nostalgia.
Boyzone were Ireland's biggest boy band of the 1990s, but their story was changed forever by the death of Stephen Gately in 2009. The band split after a 2019 farewell tour and has since reunited only occasionally, for throwback shows.
Ireland's biggest boy band
Boyzone formed in Dublin in 1993 under manager Louis Walsh and became the biggest boy band in Ireland, with Ronan Keating fronting a lineup of Keith Duffy, Shane Lynch, Mikey Graham and Stephen Gately. Their ballads topped charts across Ireland, the UK and Asia through the mid-1990s.
The loss of Stephen Gately
In 2009 Stephen Gately died, a profound loss for the band and its fans. Boyzone continued in the aftermath, but the tragedy permanently altered the group's story and cast a shadow over everything that followed.
The split and the reunions
The remaining members carried on, then announced a farewell tour called "Thank You & Goodnight" in 2018 and 2019, after which they split. Since then they have reunited occasionally — for TV specials, one-off concerts and anniversary events — with the lineup shifting from time to time.
Where Boyzone are now
Boyzone are no longer a full-time band. As of 2026 the surviving members have teased final shows as a foursome, but their reunions are occasional and nostalgic rather than a return to regular touring, and not all members have appeared at every event.
