At 3:42 am on 28 July 1976, an estimated magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck near the city of Tangshan, an industrial centre of about a million people in Hebei province, China. The quake struck at night, when most residents were asleep indoors — and it struck a city built largely of unreinforced brick and concrete, a building style that collapsed catastrophically. Nearly all of Tangshan's structures were damaged or destroyed within minutes.

The human cost was staggering, though the official figure was long kept vague. China's government eventually put the death toll at about 242,000, making it one of the deadliest earthquakes in recorded history — though some estimates run far higher. The quake also shook the surrounding region, and the coincidence of the event with the death of Mao Zedong later that year made it a moment of immense national upheaval.

Tangshan was rebuilt, with modern, seismically-resistant construction, and today it is a prosperous city — but the 1976 earthquake remains a byword for the vulnerability of un-reinforced urban construction. It also helped drive China's adoption of stricter building codes and its development of a national earthquake early-warning network.
