Sam Walton was born in 1918 in Oklahoma and grew up during the Depression, learning early that hard work and frugality were survival skills. After serving in the Army during World War II, at twenty-seven he stepped off a train in Newport, Arkansas, in 1945 in his uniform and a Sam Browne belt, ready to buy a variety store on Front Street. That cotton railroad town became the laboratory for the largest retail empire in human history.

Walton's edge was never brand or glamour — it was an obsessive, almost forensic attention to price and the competition. He spent hours in rival stores studying how they did it, dug through their trash for discarded pricing slips, and even smuggled cheap goods across state lines to undercut them. He kept a simple blue-binder ledger to track his cash, and when the numbers wouldn't balance he'd write the discrepancy in a column marked "ESP" — for "Error Some Place."

Over decades he scaled that discipline into Walmart, a chain built on low prices, small-town locations, and relentless cost control, with a legendary distribution system and an egalitarian management ethos (he flew himself, drove his own pickup, and owned a modest house). When he died in April 1992, he was among the wealthiest people in the world — yet told his successors that the success was about the associates and the customer, not himself.
