Transformed — Milton Bradley was one of the most important board-game companies in American history, home to classics like The Game of Life, Operation and Battleship. It was acquired by Hasbro in 1984 and survives today as a Hasbro brand.

Milton Bradley, founded in 1860 in Springfield, Massachusetts, grew into one of America's leading toy and board-game companies. Its founder, Milton Bradley, made his name producing lithographs and, famously, a board game that became a national hit. Over the following century the company turned out some of the best-known games in the world, including The Game of Life, Operation, Battleship, Chutes and Ladders and Candy Land.

For decades Milton Bradley was a fixture of American childhood, competing with the other giant of the industry, Parker Brothers. Along the way it was also an early force in educational toys and games, helping normalize the idea of play as something that belonged in the home.

In 1984 Milton Bradley was acquired by Hasbro, which had long wanted to expand its board-game portfolio. The deal created one of the largest toy companies in the world and reshaped the industry for decades.

An 1860 Springfield lithography shop that became the home of The Game of Life, and ended in 1984 as a brand inside Hasbro.
