Krispy Kreme

The original hot-glazed doughnut chain that became a phenomenon — then went public twice and expanded globally

Transformed — Krispy Kreme was founded in 1937 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and built a cult following around its hot, freshly glazed doughnuts. It expanded into a global franchise and has gone public twice — though its growth has been rocky at times.

Krispy Kreme began in 1937 when Vernon Rudolph started selling doughnuts from a small shop in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The chain's signature was the hot, freshly glazed doughnut — served warm the moment the 'hot light' came on — which created a devoted following and a memorable experience.

Krispy Kreme grew from a beloved southern institution into a national and, eventually, global phenomenon. It went public in 2000, expanded rapidly, and became a stock-market darling — until over-expansion and accounting concerns sent its stock into a dramatic fall in 2004. The company was taken private, then went public again in 2021.

Today Krispy Kreme operates globally with a large franchise footprint, but it is a smaller and more disciplined company than the overextended chain of its 2000s peak. The hot-glazed doughnut remains its enduring appeal.
