Harvard University was founded in 1636 in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, making it the oldest institution of higher education in the United States. Named for John Harvard, a young minister who bequeathed his library and half his estate to the fledgling college, it grew from a small colonial college into the most famous university in the world.
Over nearly four centuries Harvard became the standard against which other universities are measured. Its alumni have included U.S. presidents, Supreme Court justices, heads of state, business leaders and Nobel laureates. Its name is synonymous with academic excellence and social prestige.
