FiiO
A Guangzhou company founded by ex-BBK engineers that took the top five portable-player slots in Japan's biggest audio retailer — and is pushing into cassette and CD players while everyone else abandons them
Active — FiiO (广州飞傲电子科技有限公司, Guangzhou FiiO Electronics Technology Co., Ltd.) is a privately held Chinese audio manufacturer incorporated on 19 April 2007 and based in Baiyun District, Guangzhou. It makes portable music players, headphone amplifiers and DACs, in-ear monitors, desktop audio and — unusually — cassette and CD players. It is not publicly listed. In the Japanese retailer e-earphone's 2025 annual rankings, FiiO products took all five top spots in portable players by unit sales, and the FiiO M27 was the best-selling player by revenue, ahead of Astell&Kern's flagship.
FiiO is registered as 广州飞傲电子科技有限公司, incorporated on 19 April 2007, with its registered address in Baiyun District, Guangzhou. It is a privately held limited liability company and is not listed on any exchange.
The company was founded by audio engineers who had come out of BBK, the Chinese consumer-electronics group, and who chose portable hi-fi deliberately — to avoid competing head-on with their former employer. FiiO began life as an accessories company rather than an audio brand, and its first product, the E5, appeared in 2007. The turn came with the E3, a portable headphone amplifier that sold well in Europe and the United States and convinced the founders that there was a market for a Chinese company selling serious portable audio abroad.
The brand name is built from the words it serves: "Fi" from hi-fi, and "iO" for the digital ones and zeros. The Chinese name 飞傲 is a near-homophone.
One oddity worth stating plainly: the founder is publicly known only as "James." TechPowerUp's factory-tour interview with him is titled "Interview with James Chung (FiiO Founder)," so James Chung is a legitimate English form, but Chinese-language press refers to him only as 飞傲James and has never published his Chinese name. Registry records list shareholders and a legal representative; they do not identify him. Because "Chung" is a common romanisation of the surname 钟, and a 钟姓 shareholder holds the largest stake, it is tempting to connect the two — but that inference is not confirmed by any source, and this entry does not make it.
The company's chief executive is a co-founder referred to in a 2020 interview as 张工, explicitly described as a person distinct from James. So the founder and the sitting CEO are not the same person, which is easy to get wrong.
FiiO's product range is unusually wide. It makes portable digital audio players in the M and X series, portable DAC and headphone amplifiers, Bluetooth receivers and ear hooks, USB dongles, desktop DAC/amps and streamers, active speakers, in-ear monitors, over-ear headphones and true-wireless earbuds. It also sells sub-brands at different price points: JadeAudio (翡声) for value-focused direct sales, and Snowsky (雪漫天), introduced in 2024, aimed at a younger market.
The most distinctive thing about the range is retro hardware. FiiO makes cassette players, CD players, vinyl equipment and discrete R2R DACs at a time when most of the industry has abandoned those formats — a positioning that a 2026 Guangzhou municipal business feature described as possibly unique among audio companies worldwide.
FiiO occupies a self-owned industrial park in Baiyun District, occupied since 2022, covering about 15,000 square metres and housing research, manufacturing and marketing. It reported more than 300 employees in 2024, with a core R&D team of over 150, and a manufacturing centre of about 8,000 square metres with four assembly lines and capacity of up to two million units a year. Its test equipment includes Audio Precision analyzers, an anechoic chamber and RF test facilities. Its revenue was reported at about RMB 160 million in 2023 — roughly US$22 million — which makes it a small company by revenue and a disproportionately influential one by reputation. Export value for January to November 2025 was reported at RMB 180 million, up 33 per cent year on year, with more than 90 per cent of exports sold under its own brand across 60-plus countries.
FiiO is not owned by any larger group. No parent company was found, and there is a same-name trap worth flagging: a stock quote exists for "飞傲国际" under ticker 869468, but that entity is Fuzhou FiiO International Trading Co., Ltd., on a regional equity exchange — a different and unrelated company.

Lineage — where the name went
Engineers left one Chinese electronics giant to build portable audio, and fifteen years later their players outsold the Korean flagship in Japan. The sub-brands are how the same factory sells at three price points.
- James (James Chung) served under BBK Electronics (rose to head of R&D before leaving)
- Zhang Gong served under BBK Electronics (came out of BBK's audio division)
- 2007 — James (James Chung) founded FiiO
- Zhang Gong founded FiiO (co-founder, later chief executive)
- BBK Electronics was ancestor of FiiO (the founders' shared origin)
- 2007 — FiiO created The FiiO E5 (the first product)
- FiiO created The FiiO E3 (the amplifier that established the brand abroad)
- FiiO created JadeAudio 翡声 (the value sub-brand)
- 2024 — FiiO created Snowsky 雪漫天 (aimed at younger buyers)
- FiiO created FiiO M27 (the flagship portable player)
- 2025 — FiiO M27 defeated Astell&Kern (topped Japan's player revenue ranking)
- The e-earphone 2025 rankings created FiiO M27 (the ranking that put the M27 first by revenue)
