Denzel Washington was born in 1954 in Mount Vernon, New York, and first drew attention on television in the 1980s before breaking through in film. He won his first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Glory (1989), and cemented his leading-man status with films such as Malcolm X, Philadelphia and The Pelican Brief. His career reached a new peak when he won Best Actor for Training Day (2001), playing a corrupt police detective with swaggering menace. That made him one of a select few actors with both acting Oscars — a double winner who has repeatedly been called the finest actor of his generation. He has also become a major director, with films including Fences, Antwone Fisher and A Journal for Jordan. Into the 2020s Washington continues to work steadily, headlining action films like The Equalizer series and taking on ambitious historical projects. He has been named among the greatest performers in Hollywood history, with a reputation for craft, discipline and star power that has lasted longer than almost any of his peers.
