Cyclone Nargis (2008)
Myanmar's deadliest natural disaster — a cyclone that killed at least 140,000 and shook the world
Concluded — Cyclone Nargis made landfall in Myanmar's Ayeyarwady Delta on 2 May 2008, killing at least 140,000 people — the deadliest natural disaster in Myanmar's recorded history — and leaving millions in need of assistance.
Cyclone Nargis struck the coast of Myanmar on 2 May 2008, making landfall in the densely populated and low-lying Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) Delta. The storm surge and powerful winds devastated coastal communities, and the resulting floods swept away entire villages.
The human toll was staggering. At least 140,000 people were killed, making Nargis the deadliest natural disaster in Myanmar's recorded history and one of the deadliest cyclones ever recorded. Some estimates put the figure even higher. Around three million people were left in need of assistance.
The disaster became international news for a second reason: the ruling military junta was initially reluctant to accept foreign aid, drawing international criticism and highlighting the political dimension of the catastrophe. It took pressure and negotiation to let international relief reach the worst-affected areas, adding a layer of controversy to an already devastating tragedy.
