Chipotle Mexican Grill was founded in 1993 and grew into a defining fast-casual brand, popularizing the customizable burrito bowl and built around the promise of 'food with integrity' — fresh, responsibly sourced ingredients. It became a Wall Street darling and one of the most admired restaurant brands of its era.
In late 2015, Chipotle suffered a crisis that tested everything. A series of E. coli and norovirus outbreaks across multiple states sickened hundreds of customers and sparked an enormous public-health scare. Sales plunged dramatically as customers lost trust, and the company's reputation took a severe hit.
The fallout was significant. In 2020 Chipotle agreed to pay a record ~$25 million fine as part of a deferred prosecution agreement with prosecutors, resolving charges related to more than 1,100 cases of foodborne illness — one of the largest food-safety resolutions in US history.
Chipotle recovered remarkably. It overhauled its food-safety practices, rebuilt trust, and sales and its stock surged in the following years. Today it is a bigger and more profitable company than before the crisis, though its story remains a defining case study in food-safety and brand recovery.
