Bhote Koshi Flood (2026)

A glacier collapsed high on the Nepal-China border and sent a wall of rock, ice and water down a valley — Nepal's deadliest disaster since 2015

Concluded — On 26 August 2026 a glacier collapsed near Langtang Lirung on the Nepal-China border and sent a debris torrent down the Bhote Koshi and into the Trishuli, sweeping away villages in Rasuwa district and killing at least 1,455 people. Nepal ended the active search-and-rescue phase on 5 October 2026; recovery and reconstruction are continuing.

Shortly before nine in the morning on 26 August 2026, a mass of glacier, rock and ice gave way high on the Nepal-China border near Langtang Lirung. The debris swept down the Lhende Khola and into the Bhote Koshi river, gathering mud, boulders and sediment as it went, and poured through the border settlements of Timure and Syabrubesi in Rasuwa district. From there it surged into the Trishuli and ran downstream through Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Tanahun, Chitwan and Nawalpur. On the Chinese side the torrent tore through Gyirong County, including the Gyirong Port border crossing.

The Bhote Koshi corridor is Nepal's principal overland trade route to China and the site of several hydropower projects, and the flood destroyed both. The Rasuwagadhi crossing was closed for a prolonged period, and hydropower plants with hundreds of megawatts of combined capacity were knocked offline. Entire settlements were lost. Nepal's disaster authority confirmed 1,455 deaths, with more than five thousand people still listed as missing in early October; among those out of contact in the first weeks were hundreds of foreign trekkers and workers on the route.

The United Nations described it as Nepal's deadliest natural disaster since the April 2015 earthquake, which killed around 9,000 people. The government formally ended active search and rescue on 5 October 2026, forty days after the flood, and shifted to rehabilitation. The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, the Kathmandu-based mountain research centre, described the event as part of a worsening pattern of cascading hazards in the Himalaya, and noted that the same river corridor had already flooded catastrophically in July 2025.
