Bed Bath & Beyond

The housewares chain died in 2023; the name did not — it now belongs to a company called Neighborhood Intelligence that is rebranding Container Store shops under it

Active — Bed Bath & Beyond is still in business, but not as the company that went bankrupt. The original chain, which had about 1,530 stores at its 2019 peak, filed for Chapter 11 on 23 April 2023 and closed its last stores on 30 July 2023. Its name and other intellectual property were bought at auction by Overstock.com for US$21.5 million, and Overstock renamed itself Bed Bath & Beyond on 1 August 2023. That company became Beyond, Inc. in November 2023, took the Bed Bath & Beyond legal name and ticker back in August 2025, bought the Kirkland's chain for US$10 million and began opening "Bed Bath & Beyond Home" stores, and agreed to buy The Container Store for US$150 million in a deal completed on 8 July 2026. On 17 August 2026 the company changed its name to Neighborhood Intelligence, Inc. and moved its listing to Nasdaq under the ticker NXH.

Bed Bath & Beyond began in 1971 as Bed 'n Bath, a single store in Springfield, New Jersey, opened by Warren Eisenberg and Leonard Feinstein, both of whom had left management jobs at the discount chain Arlan's. By 1985 they were running 18 stores in the New York metropolitan area and California, and in that year they opened their first superstore, a format adopted to compete with Linens 'n Things and other linen specialists. The company changed its name to Bed Bath & Beyond in 1987 to match the larger stores.

It grew fast and bought steadily. The company went public on Nasdaq in June 1992. Its 100th store opened in Irvine, California, in October 1996, and its 200th in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, in August 1999, the year sales passed US$1 billion for the first time. It acquired Harmon Discount Health & Beauty in 2002, renamed Harmon Face Values; Buy Buy Baby in 2007, a chain founded by Leonard Feinstein's sons; Cost Plus World Market in 2012 for US$495 million; One Kings Lane in 2016; and Decorist in 2017. By 2019 it operated roughly 1,530 stores in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Canada, alongside about 280 Cost Plus World Market stores, 100 Buy Buy Baby stores, 80 Christmas Tree Shops and more than 50 Harmon stores.

The decline had several causes. Activist investors Legion Partners, Macellum Advisors and Ancora Advisors pushed for board changes in 2019, criticising acquisitions of businesses connected to the founders' families; five independent directors resigned in April 2019 and chief executive Steven Temares left in May. The company had been slow to build e-commerce, and analysts have pointed to a reduction in merchandise selection and quality, supply-chain problems and competition from Walmart, Target and HomeGoods. Its own share buybacks, in place since 2004, were the source of much of the US$5.2 billion debt that finally broke it.

The unwind came in pieces. One Kings Lane was sold in April 2020, Christmas Tree Shops in late 2020, Cost Plus World Market in February 2021. In July 2020 the company said it would close more than 200 stores, about 21 per cent of its fleet, over two years; 63 were named that September, 43 more in January 2021 and 37 more in January 2022. In February 2023 it began winding down Canada and announced 149 further US closures.

On 23 April 2023 Bed Bath & Beyond, Buy Buy Baby and 73 affiliated debtors filed for Chapter 11 in the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey. Coupons stopped being accepted on 26 April and liquidation sales began the next day; the last stores closed on 30 July 2023. The old company was renamed 20230930-DK-Butterfly-1, Inc. and its stock was cancelled on 29 September 2023.

The name went to auction. In June 2023 Overstock.com won the intellectual property with a US$21.5 million stalking-horse bid, and on 1 August 2023 — two days after the last original stores shut — Overstock relaunched its own website as Bed Bath & Beyond. Buy Buy Baby's IP went separately to Dream on Me for US$15.5 million, though its stores closed again by the end of 2024.

The buying company kept changing shape. On 24 October 2023 it announced it would rename itself Beyond, Inc. and move its listing to the New York Stock Exchange, which it did on 6 November 2023. On 28 March 2024 Beyond relaunched the Overstock.com brand. In October 2024 it announced a US$40 million investment in The Container Store, tied to Bed Bath & Beyond-branded goods being sold in Container Store locations — a route back into physical retail. The Container Store filed for Chapter 11 in December 2024 and emerged as a private company in January 2025.

In 2025 Beyond bought Kirkland's for US$10 million and said it would convert those stores into "Bed Bath & Beyond Home" locations; the first opened in Nashville in August 2025, and five were trading under the name by the end of that year, with the company talking about as many as 300 over the following years. In August 2025 it also adopted the former Bed Bath & Beyond legal name and ticker, BBBY.

Then it bought the format outright. In April 2026 Bed Bath & Beyond, Inc. agreed to acquire The Container Store for US$150 million; the first co-branded Container Store and Bed Bath & Beyond shop opened in Fort Worth, Texas, in May 2026; and the merger completed on 8 July 2026, with The Container Store becoming a wholly owned subsidiary and its 98 locations to be rebranded to incorporate the Bed Bath & Beyond name.

On 17 August 2026 the parent renamed itself Neighborhood Intelligence, Inc. and moved its listing from the New York Stock Exchange to the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker NXH. Marcus Lemonis is executive chairman and chief executive.

Two things sit outside that ownership line. The Mexican Bed Bath & Beyond division, a joint venture with Home & More, was unaffected by the 2023 US and Canadian closures and still uses the name. And in 2025 Sleep Country Canada bought the Canadian and UK rights to the Bed Bath & Beyond name and logos, with plans to relaunch the retailer in those countries in 2026.
