What Happened to RealPlayer?
The 1990s' dominant video player, once everywhere on the internet — now a niche relic of early streaming.
RealPlayer was the dominant streaming video player of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Made by RealNetworks, it still exists as a niche media player, but has long been overtaken by browsers, YouTube and modern streaming.
The original streaming pioneer
RealPlayer was launched by RealNetworks in 1995 at the very dawn of streaming media. Its distinctive player and RealMedia format let millions of people watch video online for the first time, making it one of the internet's earliest household software names.
A giant of early web video
For years, RealPlayer was the default way to watch video on the web. It was bundled on countless PCs, and its streaming technology powered much of the early internet's audio and video. At its height, RealNetworks was one of the most valuable internet companies around.
The slow fade
RealPlayer's dominance was eroded by two forces — browser-based streaming and better competitors like Windows Media Player and QuickTime. The rise of YouTube made a dedicated streaming player largely irrelevant for most people.
Where RealPlayer is now
RealPlayer still exists as a niche media player and downloader from RealNetworks. It is no longer the powerhouse it once was, but it survives as a relic of the earliest era of online video — a reminder of the days before everyone streamed in a browser tab.
