A prodigy from Minneapolis
Prince was born in 1958 in Minneapolis and showed extraordinary musical ability from a young age. He could play many instruments by his teens, and by his early twenties he was writing, producing and performing nearly everything on his records himself. He became a star in the early 1980s with albums like 1999 and its hit "Little Red Corvette."
Purple Rain
In 1984 Prince released the album and film Purple Rain, which turned him into a global superstar. The title track became one of the defining songs of the 1980s, and the project showcased his astonishing range — from guitar solos to sleek funk — along with a fiercely original visual style. It cemented him as a one-of-a-kind talent.
Artist control and reinvention
Prince was famously protective of his work. He battled his record label, once appearing with the word "slave" written on his cheek, and in 1993 changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol to escape his contract. He continued to release an astonishing volume of music, often on his own terms, and stayed busy right up to his death.

Prince died on April 21, 2016, at his home studio Paisley Park in Minnesota, at age 57. His death was ruled an accidental overdose.
