What Happened to Michael Jackson?
The "King of Pop" who transformed music and video — and died suddenly in 2009 while preparing for a comeback.
Michael Jackson was the most successful pop performer of his generation, but he died in 2009 at age 50. He remains one of the best-selling and most influential artists in music history.
From Gary to the top of the world
Michael Jackson was born in 1958 in Gary, Indiana, and grew up singing with his brothers in the Jackson 5. The group was one of the biggest acts in pop while Michael was still a teenager, and he soon broke out on his own to become the biggest star on the planet by his twenties. His voice, his dance moves and his seemingly endless run of hits made him a global icon.
Thriller and the video revolution
In 1982 Jackson released Thriller, which became the best-selling album of all time. Its videos, especially the title track and "Billie Jean," turned music videos into a major cultural force and helped push MTV into the mainstream. His choreography and his signature moonwalk changed the way artists performed and were marketed.
The scandals that shadowed his fame
Even as his popularity never truly faded, Jackson's later years were dominated by controversy. Legal battles and relentless tabloid stories about his personal life regularly overshadowed his music, and his finances and career suffered. He was acquitted in 2005 of child molestation charges, but the years of scrutiny took a heavy toll.
The comeback that never happened
By 2009, Jackson was planning a return — a huge concert series in London meant to revive his career. But on June 25, 2009, he collapsed at his rented home in Los Angeles and died at age 50. His death was later ruled a homicide, and his personal physician, Conrad Murray, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in 2011.
Where is Michael Jackson now
Michael Jackson died in 2009, but he has arguably been bigger since his death than in his final years. Posthumous releases and a vast, endlessly reissued catalogue have kept his music everywhere, and he remains one of the best-selling artists of all time. His legend as the "King of Pop" endures, even as the controversy that overshadowed his personal life remains part of his story.
