John Lennon was born in 1940 in Liverpool and rose to fame as a founder of the Beatles, the band that transformed music in the 1960s. A voice for peace

A quiet life in New York

On the evening of December 8, 1980, Lennon was shot outside his apartment building in New York City by a troubled fan. He was 40 years old. The news shocked the world, and vigils were held outside his home. Imagine became an anthem of mourning and peace.
