What Happened to Friendster?

Friendster, launched in 2002, was one of the first major social networks. It was overtaken by MySpace and Facebook, pivoted to gaming, and shut down in 2015, with its social-networking patents eventually sold.
A pioneer of social networking
Friendster launched in 2002 and pioneered the profile-and-network model we know today. Users made profiles, connected with friends and explored connections through others — introducing ideas that would define an entire industry.
Too big, too fast
Friendster caught on faster than it could handle. Its servers struggled, and the social games around it (like ranking friend-connections) pushed many users away just as rivals arrived.
Overtaken by MySpace and Facebook
As Friendster faltered, MySpace rose, then Facebook in turn. Friendster's moment had passed, and it was left playing catch-up to platforms that built on the very model it had invented.
Where Friendster is now
Friendster reinvented itself as a social gaming site, but the brand could not recover. It was shut down in 2015, and its social-networking patents were later sold. Friendster is gone, but its legacy is everywhere — it helped invent the social media that now connects the world.
