The strongest storm ever recorded
On 7 November 2013, Typhoon Haiyan — called Yolanda in the Philippines — made landfall as one of the most intense tropical cyclones ever observed, with sustained winds near 195 mph. It was a storm of almost unfathomable power, and it was aimed directly at the central Philippines.
What happened next became one of the worst natural disasters in the country's history — and a stark lesson in why wind speed is not the only thing that kills in a typhoon.
Winds that flattened a city
The winds were incredible. Haiyan's sustained winds were estimated at around 195 mph at landfall, with gusts even higher — among the strongest ever recorded in a landfalling storm. The wind tore roofs off buildings, uprooted trees and sent debris flying like projectiles.
But for all the ferocity of the wind, it was not what killed most people. It was the sea.
The storm surge that did the killing
Haiyan pushed an enormous wall of seawater before it. When it hit the coast near Tacloban, the surge rose as high as 7.5 metres — the height of a two-storey building — and slammed inland across low-lying coastal areas. It arrived so fast there was little warning.
The surge was the killer. It swept over the land, flattening structures, and drowning thousands who could not reach higher ground. Tacloban bore the brunt, and the images of its devastated streets became the defining picture of the disaster.
A humanitarian catastrophe
More than 6,000 people died, and over a million homes were damaged or destroyed. An estimated four million people were displaced, and entire regions lost power, water and shelter. The scale of destruction was such that the initial response struggled to reach survivors.
The disaster exposed weaknesses in the response, and it drew a huge international relief effort. It also forced the Philippines to think hard about disaster preparedness.
A warning for a warming world
Haiyan became a case study in why storm surge — not wind — is the deadliest threat from a big tropical cyclone, and why coastal, low-lying places in the path of intense storms are so vulnerable.
It also became a symbol of the climate era: warmer oceans can fuel more intense storms, and a country like the Philippines, on the front line, must invest in early warning, sea walls and evacuation that can outrun the water.
