What Happened in the Mount Pinatubo Eruption?

Mount Pinatubo erupted climactically on 15 June 1991 in one of the largest eruptions of the 20th century. Early warning and mass evacuation saved tens of thousands of lives, but ash, pyroclastic flows and lahar devastated the region — and the eruption briefly cooled the global climate.

A sleeping volcano wakes

For centuries, Mount Pinatubo had been quiet, its slopes covered in forest and lived on by indigenous communities. Then in 1991, the mountain began to stir. Seismic tremors, small explosions and a growing ash plume signaled something big was coming. Scientists and the Philippine government, working with the warning signs, responded with one of the largest volcanic evacuations in history.

The climactic blast

On 15 June 1991, Pinatubo erupted climactically. The blast was enormous — among the largest volcanic eruptions of the 20th century. It pushed a huge column of ash into the sky, sent scorching pyroclastic flows down the slopes, and blanketed the region in ash. The eruption coincided with a typhoon, and the combination of volcanic ash and torrential rain set the stage for catastrophe.

The aftermath: lahar

The eruption's aftermath was as destructive as the blast itself. Months of rain mixed with the ash, producing catastrophic lahar — thick volcanic mudflows that buried towns and farmland, including communities in the provinces around the mountain. The famous San Guillermo Church in Bacolor, Pampanga, was engulfed to its windows by these flows.

The lives saved

The scale of the disaster was immense, but the early warning and evacuation were among the most successful in volcanic history, saving tens of thousands of lives that would otherwise have been lost in the blast and flows.

A global effect

The eruption also had a worldwide consequence. The sulfur dioxide it released into the stratosphere formed a haze that briefly reflected sunlight and cooled the Earth's climate for about a year — one of the clearest examples of a single volcanic event influencing the global climate. Pinatubo became a landmark in volcano science and early warning.
