What Happened in the 2011 Japan Earthquake and Tsunami?
A magnitude 9.0 quake, a 40-metre wave, and the Fukushima meltdown — the costliest disaster in history and a turning point for a nation.
The 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami killed around 19,700 people and destroyed Fukushima, becoming the costliest disaster in history — and forcing Japan to confront the limits of its preparedness and its reliance on nuclear power.
The day the ground moved and the sea came in
On 11 March 2011, at 2:46 pm local time, the most powerful earthquake ever to hit Japan struck 80 km off the coast of Honshu. It was a magnitude 9.0, so violent it shifted Japan's largest island 2.4 metres east and moved the Earth on its axis. Buildings across the country swayed and the ground rolled for minutes.
But the earthquake was only the beginning. It triggered a tsunami that would become the defining catastrophe — and set off a nuclear accident that turned a natural disaster into a national reckoning.
A magnitude 9.0 earthquake
The Tōhoku earthquake was a mega-thrust quake, the kind that occurs where one tectonic plate slides under another. The rupture ran for hundreds of kilometres along the Japan Trench and released energy on a scale Japan's preparedness had anticipated but never truly faced.
Remarkably, given its size, most of Japan's modern buildings withstood the shaking — a testament to strict, earthquake-resistant building codes. The real danger wasn't the shaking at all.

The quake displaced an enormous volume of seawater, sending a tsunami racing toward the Japanese coast at jet speed. When it arrived, it was enormous — in places over 40 metres high, far overtopping the sea walls built to protect coastal towns.
It swept inland for kilometres, carrying away homes, cars, ships and people. Entire communities were erased. The final toll was around 19,700 dead and missing, the vast majority drowned by the wave.
Fukushima: the disaster inside the disaster
As the tsunami raced inland, it struck the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The plant had backup generators to cool its reactors, but they were placed where the wave could reach them. When the water flooded in, it knocked out the power — and with it, the cooling systems.
With no cooling, the reactors overheated and suffered meltdowns, and hydrogen explosions tore through the buildings. It was the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl, forcing mass evacuations and leaving a large area permanently contaminated.
The costliest disaster in history
The economic damage was estimated at over $300 billion — the most expensive natural disaster ever recorded. Japan faced the enormous, slow task of rebuilding towns and decontaminating land, while the nuclear crisis cast a long shadow over the country's energy policy.
In the years that followed, Japan largely suspended its nuclear fleet, and public trust in nuclear power collapsed. The disaster also reshaped global thinking about where and how to site nuclear plants — and how vulnerable engineered systems are to natural extremes.
What Japan learned
Out of the tragedy came a commitment to preparedness. Japan's earthquake early-warning warning system, which had already given some people seconds of notice, was further refined, and a major effort went into tsunami-proofing coastal infrastructure.
The 2011 disaster is a reminder that the most dangerous natural events are often not the ones buildings fall in, but the ones — like a tsunami or a flood — where the water itself does the damage, and where the failure is in what can't be engineered away.
